Russell and I first moved here to Fort Worth in November of 2009. We had lived in Miami for about six years. We moved into a one bedroom apartment. I got the bedroom this time. In Miami Russ had one of the two bedrooms and Ken had the other. So this time I got the bedroom.
One of my concerns was the electric bill here. I am living on a very limited income until I win the lottery (just joking everyone …I am not one of those people that thinks he is going to win the lottery). I signed up with TXU Energy and I been very happy with the bills. The first full bill was for December (2009) and it was $104.44, then the next bill was $150.14, $110.79, $85.68, $69.94, $57.40 and last month was $95.56 and this month was $74.29 for July. So I have four months that I have never seen a past bill; August, September, October and November. If the monthly bill is $100.00 or under I am happy. We do not pay a water or gas bill. We do not own a car.

A new month and this will be a hot month for Fort Worth. We just need to make it through August and the weather will start and get better. I been running the ceiling fan in my room. We have one in the living room and I have not been running it. I did not pay any attention but there is a switch for direction of the fan. I guess I have had it running in the wrong direction for the hot weather.
"…In the summer, use the ceiling fan in the counterclockwise direction. While standing directly under the ceiling fan you should feel a cool breeze. The airflow produced creates a wind-chill effect, making you "feel" cooler. In the winter, reverse the motor and operate the ceiling fan at low speed in the clockwise direction. This produces a gentle updraft, which forces warm air near the ceiling down into the occupied space. Remember to adjust your thermostat when using your ceiling fan — additional energy and dollar savings could be realized with this simple step!" Energy Star
It is 87 F right now at 0837 hours. It is going to get to 104 F today in Fort Worth. But it will be cooler the rest of the week 103 on Monday, 103 on Tuesday, 102 on Wednesday, 101 on Thursday, 101 on Friday and hell on Saturday we may need to put on a coat it is only going to be 100 degrees in Fort Worth.
President Obama turns 49 next week, and OFA supporters across the country are sharing in the fun. Volunteers on the ground are holding birthday parties — and we’ll be recruiting new volunteers for this grassroots movement that has helped President Obama so much. Want to come? Here’s what we’re doing in Fort Worth:
What: President’s birthday event Where: 3004 W. Lancaster Fort Worth, TX 76102 When: Wednesday, August 4th 5:00 pm
It is hot in Fort Worth (TX). I was out in the heat.
Do I look hot? Well, OK OK you know what I mean. (Of course I look "hot" with my new hat on. I am sure woman all over the world, and gay guys, want me after seeing me with my new hat on and a sweat worked up.)
Sonic is open for breakfast in west Fort Worth. I just had their SuperSONIC Breakfast Burrito.
"Let the big flavor of the SuperSONIC® Breakfast Burrito get you out of bed. A medley of Savory Sausage, Scrambled Egg, Melty Cheese, Tater Tots, Diced Onions, Ripe Tomatoes and Spicy Jalapeños all wrapped up in a warm flour tortilla. It’ll sing to your taste buds. Which, if you ask us, is a pretty cool way to start your morning."
It was pretty good. I like Jalaperios but I think they should cut them smaller or something. I also like Tater Tots but with them in the burrito I just got the feeling that they were left over from last night. I know that is not the case they are being smart and working and building with the food they sell and not having to stock some other item. But I eat their hamburgers in the afternoon and at night and I eat them with a side order of Tater Tots. Smile
Next time I am just going to try the plain Breakfast Burrito.
"Just weeks after breaking up a Russian spy ring that included a 28-year-old woman, federal authorities have charged a Dallas-area woman of a similar age with trying to smuggle three night-vision rifle sights to Russia.
A federal court affidavit filed in New York accuses 24-year-old Anna Fermanova of suburban Plano of trying tried to move the scopes in March without the proper export licenses.
The devices were seized as Fermanova was boarding a plane for Moscow at JFK International Airport, according to the document. She was allowed to complete the trip but was arrested after her return on a charge of attempting to export U.S. munitions. She was arrested at her parents’ Plano home on July 15. She was released to home detention after posting $50,000 bond…" Fox News
I think I should be living in the Austin Texas area and not the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
I do not have a problem with schools teaching abstinence from sex until you are an adult. My problem is if they teach "abstinence only" education. They need to teach sex education. The state of Texas is big there is a small light of hope in the SMCISD.
Sen. John Cornyn on C-Span Newsmakers says that he looks back on Bush with fondness.
Why in the world would Sen. Cornyn look back with fondness at the worst President of the United States? It sounds like Sen. Cornyn must hate the people of Texas and the United States. All of our current problems are the fault of President Bush.
Texas’s senators are gearing up to cast their last votes on Wall Street reform tomorrow. Right now, we believe we might have just enough votes to pass this historic legislation. But we won’t know until the final vote is cast — and we’re only certain of one thing: it could come down to one single senator. That’s how close this is — and that’s how urgently we need your help. Your senators, John Cornyn and Kay Bailey Hutchison, have stood with the big banks on Wall Street every chance they’ve had. They need to know you’ll be watching tomorrow to see whose side they’re on. Call your senators now and let them know you support Wall Street reform — and then make sure to let us know what they said. Call Sen. Hutchison at (202) 224-5922 Call Sen. Cornyn at (202) 224-2934
We’re on the verge of passing the boldest overhaul of the financial system since the Great Depression. Wall Street reform will bring more economic security to consumers by forcing credit card companies, mortgage companies, and predatory lenders to stop exploiting consumers with hidden fees and pages of fine print. It will create a new Consumer Financial Protection Agency — with a responsibility to protect all of us. And it will ensure that taxpayers will never again be asked to bail out the big banks that are "too big to fail." Reform is facing one last showdown in the Senate. Lobbyists for the big banks are doing everything they can to stop this legislation before it lands on President Obama’s desk. Let’s help pass reform — and show once again that the movement we built can go up against the most powerful special interests in Washington and win. Call your senators now: http://my.barackobama.com/WSRFinalVote Thanks for your help today, Mitch Mitch Stewart Director Organizing for America
I would have to win a lottery …Which is not going to happen… But I was wondering what sort of home could I buy in Fort Worth if I had a LOT of money. If money was no object what type of home could a person buy in Fort Worth. I lived in Miami for over five years and I know what you can buy down there. What about here in Fort Worth?
I looked at a bunch of them online and you know I do not think I would be happy with them even if I had that sort of money. They are to big. They are to spread out. It would be great for a big young family. I would want something on water. I guess if I had money I would be thinking about someplace in FL. Someplace without oil washing up on the beach and someplace in FL, if there is such a place, that had people speaking English. When I lived in Miami there was a house that was for sale that was used by the CIA in the past and it came with an island. Now that sounds like my sort of place.
I think on Saturday I may have a dollar and if I do I will buy a lottery ticket. If I win you can help me pick out a new big home! SMILE
Fourth of July celebrations should be fun — and safe. The Fort Worth Fire Department encourages residents to leave fireworks to trained professionals because, in the wrong hands, they can cause serious injury. Besides, fireworks are illegal to possess, use or sell in the Fort Worth city limits.
Enforcement teams of police officers and firefighters will be patrolling the city this weekend. Anyone caught violating the ordinance will be ticketed and all fireworks will be confiscated. Fines for a fireworks citation range from $564 to $2,000; violators may receive multiple citations.
Fireworks pose a risk of starting unwanted fires. The hazards include uncontrolled fires set by wayward rockets and mortars.
Physical injury to fireworks users and bystanders is common. Sparklers — yes, even sparklers are banned — burn at more than 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
The Fort Worth Fire Department hopes that all residents enjoy this holiday in a safe and legal way. The department recommends that Fort Worth residents leave the fireworks to the professionals and find a public display to watch, such as at Fort Worth’s Fourth.
I went out last night as soon as it got dark looking for fireworks. I saw some in the distance a long way off. I heard a very few fire crackers in the area. I did not know that fireworks were illegal in Fort Worth. I have to say that it looked like everyone was following the law. That is a surprise to me. I been in other cities were fireworks not legal and everyone was shooting them anyway. I was the only officer working in Raymore (MO) one year and fireworks were illegal and the entire town was out in their yards and the streets shooting hem off. I had to be careful there was so much smoke it was hard to drive.
The First Lady is asking 100 percent of Americans to support the brave men and women in uniform and their families back home. Here are some things you can do in your community to get started:
Stay informed about the activities and concerns of military families in your community and across the nation;
Take time out to get to know and express appreciation to military families;
Help ensure military families have the opportunity to share their stories and voice their concerns in your community;
Help ensure the places where you work, worship, and participate in community life connect their activities to addressing military families’ unique challenges; and
Identify opportunities in your communities to tap into the unique skills, experience and commitment to service our military families display each day.
Today, the First Family will host more than 1,200 military heroes and their families for a Fourth of July celebration at the White House. Tune in for the Second Annual “Salute to the Military” USO Concert, featuring The Killers, Brandi Carlile, Cedric “The Entertainer,” and “The President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band. The evening wraps up with a viewing of the fireworks on the National Mall. You can watch the whole thing live on WhiteHouse.gov/live starting at 7 PM EDT. Happy Independence Day!
In case you missed it, watch a video from last year’s 4th of July celebration at the White House.
I have been living here in west Fort Worth for about six months. The apartment rent is not bad ($475.00 for a one bedroom). The electric bill has not been to bad. Everyone seems very nice here. This is a mixed race area. I am not sure what the stats are but I am white and I think everyone is very friendly and nice. My son is 33 years old and has schizophrenia. His medication cost almost $400.00 a month and he has been getting it for just a small payment each month. I am not sure if the drug company is giving out the medication for free or just how it works. My ex-wife has many medical problems and she can get around Fort Worth using the MITTS bus. She has to pay a small fee for service but she can get to the doctor’s offices and other places in her wheelchair. I spent a bit over five years in Miami FL. The weather was great but I think for someone that only speaks English that Miami is the worst place to live in the United States.
Right now I am very happy here in Fort Worth. I agree the Republicans down here in Texas are fucking up the state but hell they are all over the United States. If you can tell me where to go to get away from the GOP I would be happy.
Although this blog hasn't reviewed Ellerbe's, the Bon Appetit blog has and they say that Ellerbe's is one of the Top 10 Best New Restaurants in the United States. Check out the Bon Appetit blog. One favor though - for all of you who follow that link, don't start expecting quality reviews like Bon Appetit provides. Also note that dallas di […]
Mamma Mia's has recently taken over the old Palermo's location on Magnolia. We've switched out Italian restaurants and I daresay, we traded up. If you'll remember, which you no doubt will, I was quite impressed with the scrappy little Palermo's. That dirty hole in the wall that had lasted for years on Magnolia even when little else w […]
My real FWHITW resolutions: 1) Go to the following places in the new year: ... Nona Tata Over two years ago I made this New Year's Resolution to visit Nonna Tata. That was before 2008. I finally made it, but it took until 2010. Nonna Tata is the Southside sensation that has filled its small space every night with crowds waiting outside for some deliciou […]
Recently, there was an article in the Star-Telegram about Las Vegas Trail in Fort Worth and how it used to be the hip cool place to live. The time period of its reign was sometime in the 80's. Picture bowling teams, Dales, Rhondas. and lots of rolled up sleeves on suits. That's what was going on in Fort Worth's little Vegas. Although by the lo […]
Sitting in a small strip center off of Forest Park is a Greek restaurant which has been around longer than me. The Greek House moved to the Forest Park Restaurant Row (Greek House, Sapristi, Ruffino's, Grady's) years ago, but existed long before that. It's run by an older couple that I can only assume are the parents of the World's Number […]
You may recall that I recently found a great Thai place. Well, Fort Worth has another great Thai place (that makes three when you add in Thai Tina). Junsuree was recommended by many of you folks through emails, comments, threatening bricks thrown through the official HITW hideout, etc. But finally, some "locals" who are somehow related to Sarah Pal […]
Did you hear that Fort Worth will be hosting ESPN for Super Bowl week? dallas is pissed (according to the Observer website). Turns out, nobody in dallas really knows whats going on over here. So I'm going to extend an informal invitation to the people of the Near East to come and enjoy our town. To entice them, here is a hole in the wall bar review. Hav […]
For too many years, Flying Fish has sat collecting dust in the "Is it a hole" department. Something about it seemed chainy. It fit so well into its environment that it confused the department's editors. After a recent visit, I pulled it out of the department. It is in fact a small chain with about five or six other locations. However, bec […]
I've updated the format and layout of the blog for the first time in three years. At some point, I'll also be removing many of the tags that seem useless in order to make them more streamlined. This way you'll just see a list of basic restaurant types, with a few tabs for "patio" and a few other useful things. If you've got any […]
Alright all you Fall Foliage Fanatics, its time to get out and show yourself...so we can judge you harshly. And where is the best place to view the Fort's Fall Foliage? Near the trees, obviously. George's Specialty Foods on White Settlement faces the Trinity, northwest of downtown and all the large trees along the river bank. When the weather is ni […]
